Legionnaires’ disease case diagnosed at Auburn assisted living center - MassLive.com

The Brookdale Eddy Pond assisted living center in Auburn confirmed Thursday that one of its residents has been diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease.

A Brookdale spokesperson for the facility said in a statement to MassLive that the source of the contamination remains unknown.

“Our greatest concern is the health of the residents of our community, so we have responded quickly and proactively to this situation,” the spokesperson said. “We cannot comment on the identified case(s) given confidentiality restrictions. We are working with a national water treatment company and are following their protocols and recommendations regarding Legionella bacteria... we are taking a proactive approach to help stop any spread of this bacteria.”

Among older patients, Legionnaires’ disease can be more lethal than among younger people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The disease is caused by a serious type of pneumonia that enters the body through small water droplets or accidentally swallowing water containing Legionella bacteria into the lungs. Slowing the spread of the disease requires building owners and managers to maintain building water systems and implement controls for the bacteria.

Symptoms include cough, shortness of breath, fever, muscle aches and headaches, and begin two to 14 days after exposure. A milder form of Legionnaires’ disease is called Pontiac Fever, where patients primarily experience a fever and muscle aches, according to the CDC.
