Probable Case of Monkeypox reported in Nueces County - Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI TX – On August 25, Christus Spohn Hospital erroneously reported a confirmed case of Monkeypox in Nueces County for a male in his late 20s. The Corpus Christ-Nueces County Public Health District received notification from the Department of State Health Services that the case is considered probable.

A probable case of Monkeypox means an individual tested positive for the orthopoxvirus, which includes several pox viruses, including Monkeypox.

The Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health District is performing a case investigation.

All test specimens must be sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for testing. The CDC continues to monitor cases worldwide to determine the cause of the outbreak, but the risk to the U.S. population is currently considered low.

According to the CDC, Monkeypox is a severe acute illness with symptoms including:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle Aches
  • Backache
  • Swollen Lymph Nodes
  • Chills
  • Exhaustion
  • Pimple-like rash on face, inside mouth, or other extremities

Monkeypox closely resembles smallpox and can be transmitted through close, skin-to-skin contact.

Anyone experiencing symptoms of Monkeypox should contact their healthcare provider for immediate assessment, including anyone who:

  • Recently traveled to countries where Monkeypox cases have been reported.
  • Has come into contact with an infected animal or items contaminated with the virus.
  • Has come into contact with an individual diagnosed with confirmed or suspected Monkeypox.
  • Has engaged in intimate person-to-person contact with anyone experiencing monkeypox symptoms.

Tips for preventing infection include:

  • Avoid close, skin-to-skin contact with anyone with a rash resembling Monkeypox.
  • Avoid touching the rash or scabs of a person with Monkeypox.
  • Do not kiss, hug, cuddle or engage in sexual activity with anyone with Monkeypox.
  • Avoid contact with objects or items used by people with Monkeypox.
  • Do not share eating utensils or cups with a person with Monkeypox.
  • Do not handle or touch an individual's bedding, towels, or clothing with Monkeypox.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer before eating, touching your face, or using the bathroom.
