Cristiano Ronaldo’s sexual assault case recommended for dismissal - The Athletic

The civil case in relation to a 2010 sexual assault case against Cristiano Ronaldo has been recommended for dismissal by a Las Vegas court.

In 2010, Kathryn Mayorga accepted £270,000 ($375,000) as an out-of-court settlement with Ronaldo and his representatives after accusing him of rape. Ronaldo has always maintained his relations with Mayorga were consensual.

Mayorga later opened a civil case claiming damages against Ronaldo for an alleged sexual assault.

Judge Daniel Albregts, however, has now criticised the behaviour of Mayorga’s lawyer, Leslie Mark Stovall.

“Dismissing Mayorga’s case for the inappropriate conduct of her attorney is a harsh result,” Albregts wrote in a recommendation to U.S. District Judge Jennifer Dorsey. “But it is, unfortunately, the only appropriate sanction to ensure the integrity of the judicial process.”

“Stovall has acted in bad faith to his client’s — and his profession’s — detriment,” Albregts added.

Mayorga’s lawyers could still object to the court’s recommendation for dismissal. Her legal team has 14 days to object to the decision of the court.

The criminal case in relation to the accusation was previously dismissed by the Las Vegas District Attorney.

Ronaldo’s legal team called for the civil case to be dismissed earlier this year.

“No sanction less than dismissal will suffice,” Ronaldo’s attorneys, Peter Christiansen and Kendelee Works, said in May. “At a minimum, Stovall must be disqualified from acting as counsel in this matter.”

In 2018, Ronaldo said: “I firmly deny the accusations being issued against me. Rape is an abominable crime that goes against everything I am and believe in.”
