White House wants NY to avoid setback in case of leadership change - POLITICO

Press secretary Jen Psaki on Wednesday said the White House didn’t want to see New Yorkers affected “in a negative way” by potential leadership turnover in the state as it continues its battle with Covid.

“The president made clear, because of the abhorrent allegations that were made public yesterday, that it is time for Governor Cuomo to resign,” Psaki said during a White House press briefing. “At the same time, we do not want the people of New York to be impacted in a negative way as they’re working to fight Covid.”

Psaki added that the White House would continue to work with the Cuomo administration to combat the pandemic, and that the administration would do the same if leadership changed.

On Tuesday morning, New York Attorney General Tish James announced that her office’s investigation found that Cuomo sexually harassed multiple women and fostered a toxic work environment. The governor vehemently denied the claims in a news conference later in the day, saying that he “never touched anyone inappropriately or made inappropriate sexual advances.”

Biden joined the chorus of voices calling on Cuomo to resign Tuesday after the release of the damning report.

“I think he should resign,” Biden said. “What I said is if the attorney general concluded the allegations are correct in March, that I would recommend he resign. That’s what I’m doing today.”

Cuomo gained national attention and praise early in the pandemic as leader of the country’s earliest Covid epicenter. The governor held almost 100 daily Covid news briefings in a row.

The national attention took a negative turn this year after sexual harassment allegations surfaced. The governor is also under investigation for his handling of nursing home policies after his administration hid data about Covid deaths of nursing home residents in the state.
