Coronavirus update for Friday, Aug. 20: Michigan reports highest 7-day case average since May 18 - MLive.com

Coronavirus cases numbers continued to track upward this week as the state recorded its worst 7-day average of new cases in three months.

There were 4,197 new coronavirus cases - an average of 2,098 a day - and 37 confirmed deaths reported in Michigan on Thursday, Aug. 19, and Friday, Aug. 20. In just two days, the total number of cases in Michigan increased by nearly 0.5%.

Of the new deaths, 13 were identified in a review of death certificates, done three times a week, and the case count represents new referrals of confirmed cases to the Michigan Disease Surveillance System since the last web update on Wednesday, Aug. 18.

The state is averaging 1,492 new cases and 15 new deaths per day over the last week, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. This is the highest seven-day average the state has seen since May 18. It is up from a seven-day average of 1,233 cases a week ago, on Aug. 13.

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 929,574 reported coronavirus cases and 20,113 confirmed deaths. Additionally, the state has reported 111,099 probable cases and 1,280 probable deaths, in which a physician and/or antigen test ruled it COVID-19 but no confirmatory PCR test, which detects the presence of a virus, was done.

Of Michigan’s 83 counties, 81 reported new cases Thursday and/or Friday. Topping the list was Wayne with 621, followed by Oakland with 510 and Kent with 327. Other top-reporting counties included Macomb (305), Kalamazoo (165), Ottawa (158), Genesee (154), Washtenaw (140), Livingston (110), and Ingham (97).

Gogebic County in the western Upper Peninsula and Presque Isle County at the eastern top of the Lower Peninsula were the only counties reporting zero cases.

Twenty counties reported at least one death in the last two days. Wayne led with seven.

Kalamazoo, Kent, Macomb and Oakland counties each had three deaths.

There were two deaths in each of Clinton, Ingham, Jackson, Manistee and Midland counties.

Alcona, Bay, Calhoun, Eaton, Gladwin, Hillsdale, Isabella, Lapeer, Menominee and Monroe counties each reported one death.

As of Friday, Aug. 20, 59.8% of the eligible population statewide is at least partially vaccinated against COVID-19. To look at immunization rates by county, view the chart below. (Can’t see it? Click here.)

As of Friday, Hospitals statewide were treating 1,011 patients with confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19, with 233 patients in the ICU. That’s up from 944 patients on Wednesday and 908 on Aug. 13, when 200 patients were in the ICU.

Of the 21,435 diagnostic tests processed on Thursday, Aug. 19, 7.9% came back positive for SARS-CoV-2. The seven-day average is now 8.4%, down slightly from 8.6% on Aug. 13.

The seven-day average of deaths in Michigan is 15. It is up from a seven-day average of nine on Aug. 13.
