CDC: Corrected Florida COVID case numbers to be released - Bay News 9

A discrepancy into the latest COVID-19 numbers in Florida will soon be corrected, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed to Spectrum News on Tuesday.

On Monday, the CDC reported the state saw another record number of new COVID cases. But the Florida Department of Health disagreed.

More COVID-19 Coverage

On Monday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 28,317 new cases in the state.

Numbers from Sunday showed 28,316 people tested positive.

The Florida Department of Health said those numbers were accumulated over "multiple days" and later provided the following figures:

  • Friday, Aug. 6: 21,500
  • Saturday Aug. 7: 19,567
  • Sunday, Aug. 8: 15,319
  • 3-day average: 18,795

During the first year of the pandemic, the Florida Dept. of Health released daily COVID-19 case numbers. It switched to weekly numbers recently though, relying on the CDC to track the daily numbers instead.

A CDC spokesperson sent this statement to Spectrum News on Tuesday:

"Thank you for reaching out to CDC regarding Florida's data on CDC's website. CDC and the Florida Department of Health are working to update the data to correct the information by the date the case occurred. Corrected case counts by date should repost on CDC's COVID Data Tracker later today."

In the meantime, as more people contract the coronavirus in Florida, more people are winding up in the hospital. Florida currently has 13,977 people being treated, and 2,836 of them are in intensive care.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 82.74% of Florida's inpatient beds are currently in use — 24.74% of them by COVID patients.

That state's ICUs are at 88.85% of capacity, and 44.76% of their patients are COVID-19 positive.
