Manistee County sees 1 new case - Manistee News Advocate

MANISTEE — Manistee County has had 1,091 cases of COVID-19 and 19 deaths, as of Saturday's data provided by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

This is an increase of one case and no new deaths since Friday.

The state shows 544 of the cases in the county listed as female, 539 were listed as male and eight as unknown.

The DHD#10 case summary for May 8 shows that from May 2-8, some Manistee County cases were school-age cases.

Manistee County has 48.3% of its population completely vaccinated against COVID-19, according to the state’s data from Friday. This is 10,621 out of 21,990 eligible residents, according to 2019 Census estimates for people 12 years old and older. In Benzie County, 52.4% of the residents are completely vaccinated.

There have been about 7.67 million vaccine doses administered in Michigan; 42.1% of the state’s eligible population is completely vaccinated. About 21,600 doses total were administered in Manistee County as of Saturday's update.

DHD#10 is now allowing parents and guardians to schedule an appointment to vaccinate their children age 12 and over from COVID-19 at www.dhd10.org/schedule.

Here are some quick facts from the most recent MDHHS report:

• There have been 874,624 cases and 18,607 deaths statewide during the pandemic.

• This is an increase of 1,289 cases and 107 deaths. The deaths announced Saturday include 91 identified during a vital records review.

• Case counts are cumulative, not reduced due to recoveries and are listed for the patients' resident county.

• There have been 755,119 recoveries from COVID-19. This information was published by the state on May 14 and is updated weekly.

• Recovery numbers show that a person is alive after 30 days from the onset of testing or onset of symptoms.

• Grand Traverse County reported 5,543 cases and 82 deaths; an increase of five cases and zero deaths.

• Wexford County reported 2,503 cases and 42 deaths; an increase of three cases and zero deaths.

• Benzie County has seen 1,048 cases and 33 deaths; an increase of zero cases and zero deaths.

• Lake County has seen 562 cases and 14 deaths; an increase of zero cases and zero deaths.

• Mason County has seen 1,975 cases and 36 deaths; an increase of one case and zero deaths.

Manistee County is considered part of Region 7 for tracking by the state. Region 7 includes Manistee and 17 other counties.

The region had 50 cases of adult patients either confirmed or suspected of COVID-19 hospitalized, one on a ventilator and 18 adults either confirmed or suspected COVID-19 cases who were in intensive care.

On Monday 64 patients were hospitalized, and more than a week ago on May 5 there were 78 patients hospitalized.

Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital has no COVID-19 patients as of Thursday, the most recent data available.

COVID-19 outbreaks associated with educational institutions are reported by local health departments each week to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

An outbreak is defined as educational institutions (i.e., kindergarten through grade 12 and institutions of higher education) that have been found by their local health department to have two or more COVID-19 cases who may have shared exposure on school grounds and are from different households This information is updated each week on the MDHHS website; it was last updated on May 10.

• Lake Ann Elementary School in Benzie County has a recent outbreak with three cases (students). This was first reported on May 10.

• Manistee Middle School has an ongoing outbreak with two cases (students). This was first reported on April 26.

• Frankfort High School in Benzie County has an ongoing outbreak with nine cases (students). This was first reported on April 5.

• Frankfort Elementary School in Benzie County has an ongoing outbreak with 13 cases (students and staff). This was first reported on April 19.

• Benzie Central Community Schools has an ongoing outbreak with 27 cases (students and staff) in the high school. This was first reported on Jan. 18.

The latest numbers from the CDC show the U.S. has reported 32.75 million cases and 582,769 deaths from COVID-19.

The U.S. has the highest counts globally. India has the second highest number of cases and Brazil has the second highest number of deaths.

WHO lists 162.2 million confirmed cases and 3.4 million deaths in the world. There have been 1.26 billion vaccine doses administered worldwide.
