Charges upgraded in drug-dealing case involving overdose - Greenfield Daily Reporter

HANCOCK COUNTY — An Indianapolis man who police said was involved in selling drugs, causing a man to overdose, had a serious felony charge added to counts he already is facing from an incident in July 2020.

Michael Barnett Jr., 39, Indianapolis, has been charged with a Level 2 felony count of dealing a narcotic drug, manufacturing and financing. He also faces a Level 5 felony count of dealing and manufacturing; and a Level 6 felony count of possession of a narcotic drug.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Barnett sold drugs in the Fortville area to a man in July 2020 who needed multiple doses of Narcan to be revived after he had taken heroin. A woman, who was arrested at the time of the overdose and who called authorities to save the man, worked with investigators to find Barnett.

The case is somewhat complex, deputy prosecutor Kevin Kelly said. Barnett was originally arrested in Shelby County but was carrying drugs that were not found until he arrived at the Hancock County Jail.

That caused one of the charges, the most serious, to be originally filed in Shelby County. However, the two jurisdictions worked out an agreement; charges in Shelby County were eventually dropped, and the new Level 2 felony charge was added to the Hancock County case, Kelly said.

Barnett had posted a $10,000 cash bond on the two original local charges in 2020, but Shelby County, who also had a hold on him, picked him up, and that’s where Barnett has been until the deal was worked out.

Barnett was transferred to the county jail Tuesday, March 30. He is set to have a change-of-plea and sentencing hearing Wednesday, April 28, in Hancock County Superior Court 1 in front of Judge D.J. Davis.

The most serious charge against him carries a sentence of up to 30 years in prison.
