San Bernardino County still seeing lower coronavirus case, hospitalization numbers - San Bernardino County Sun

Cases and hospitalizations due to COVID-19 are continuing to decline in San Bernardino County, increasing the likelihood of the county moving to the less-restrictive orange tier, in which more indoor businesses could reopen.

On Thursday, March 18, the county reported 185 new coronavirus cases and 38 deaths. State data show 182 patients remain hospitalized with the virus as of Wednesday, March 17,  including 37 in intensive care.

The number of hospitalized patients has also declined 16.9% from a week earlier. The total case positivity rate is at 2.7%, the lowest it has been since the started its color-coded tier system in August.

San Bernardino County on Wednesday also crossed the 500,000 mark for the number of vaccine doses received by residents.

Here are the latest numbers, as of Thursday, according to county and state public health officials.

San Bernardino County

Confirmed cases: 289,242 total, up 185 from Wednesday, averaging 135 reported per day in the past week

Deaths: 3,619 total, up 38 from Wednesday, averaging 56.3 reported per day in the past week

Hospital survey: 182 confirmed and 23 suspected patients hospitalized Wednesday, including 37 confirmed and two suspected patients in the ICU, with 25 of 25 facilities reporting. The number of confirmed patients is down 16.9% from a week earlier.

Tests: 2,609,720 total, up 7,956 from Wednesday, averaging 7,055 reported per day in the past week

Resolved cases (estimate): 284,253 total, up 157 from Wednesday, averaging 135 per day in the past week

Vaccinations: San Bernardino County residents have received 523,005 vaccine doses, with 183,278 people fully vaccinated

Reopening plan tier: Red (substantial risk level; some nonessential indoor business operations are closed) based on these metrics as of Tuesday:

• New cases per day per 100,000 residents: 5.2
• Case rate adjusted for testing volume: 5.2
• Test positivity rate: 2.7% (3.0% in socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods)
• What’s next: To advance to the orange tier and reopen more businesses, San Bernardino County would need an adjusted case rate below 4.0 and a positivity rate below 5.0% for the whole county and 5.3% in disadvantaged neighborhoods for two consecutive weeks, and to have been in the red tier for three weeks. If metrics get worse, it could move back into the more restrictive purple tier.
