COVID-19 case rates increasing in some area counties; Renville County officials say they are concerned - West Central Tribune

In general, the case rate had been falling through the winter after spiking into the triple digits in late fall.

Renville County reported a case rate of 40.76 per 10,000 residents, an increase of more than 14 over the week before. Renville County is one of 11 counties in the state with case rates of 30 or more and the only one in the area. All other area counties have case rates below 25.

Renville County officials have expressed concern this week about the rise in cases in the county. Jill Bruns, public health director, said she cannot say with certainty why the county’s rate is higher, but suspects it stems from individuals not practicing COVID-19 protocols.

Pope County had an increase of nearly 11, to a case rate of 24.59 per 10,000 residents.

Big Stone County had a case rate of 15.95 per 10,000 residents, a decrease of nearly 12.

Among the other counties tracked by the West Central Tribune, changes in case rates were less than 10, with three counties decreasing and five counties increasing.

The case rate measures the county’s number of newly confirmed cases over a two-week period per 10,000 residents. The state divides the number of new cases by the number found by dividing a county’s population by 10,000.

School districts track positive cases and quarantine activity in their buildings and consult with public health officials and others to determine how to operate their schools during the pandemic. The case rate is one factor they may consider. The Minnesota Department of Health releases the case rate report at 11 a.m. each Thursday.

The state considers a 14-day case rate of 10 or higher to represent an elevated risk of COVID-19 transmission in the community, especially when the level is sustained or increases over time.

This list includes the current case rate for area counties from Feb. 21 to March 6 and how it changed from a week ago:

  • Big Stone County: 15.95, down
  • Chippewa County: 14.15, up
  • Kandiyohi County: 15.00, up
  • Lac qui Parle County: 13.29, up
  • Meeker County: 13.00, up
  • Pope County: 24.59, up
  • Redwood County: 5.87, down
  • Renville County: 40.76, up
  • Stearns County: 14.86, up
  • Swift County: 7.44, down
  • Yellow Medicine County: 5.07, down

Separately, the Minnesota Department of Health each week also updates its list of school buildings that reported five or more confirmed cases of COVID-19 in students or staff who were in the building while infectious during a two-week reporting period.

Area school buildings on the list are Minnewaska Secondary, Glenwood, in Pope County, and BOLD Middle School and BOLD Senior High School, both in Olivia in Renville County.

School buildings that have not reported a new case for 28 days will be removed. If five or more cases are reported in a school building in a subsequent two-week period, they will once again be listed.
