Coronavirus case metrics on the rise in Broomfield; residents continue to get vaccinated - Boulder Daily Camera

The city and county’s seven-day case incidence and seven-day average positivity of COVID-19 cases are both increasing, Public Health Director Jason Vahling told City Council on Tuesday evening, though hospitalization have stayed stable.

There have been 3,982 COVID-19 cases recorded among Broomfield residents, while 28,387 doses of the vaccine have been administered.

“And no new deaths over the last week, which is always critical,” he added.

Data updated Tuesday evening shows among cases, 196 residents have been hospitalized and 74 have died. There have been 76,400 coronavirus tests administered. As of Tuesday, the seven-day cumulative incidence per 100,000 people was 155.5, higher than the March 7 rate of 147. The seven-day average positivity is at 4.7%, an increase from the March 7 rate of 3.8%.

The global standard to ensuring enough testing is performed is a percent positivity of less than 5%, according to the city and county’s website. Vahling explained to council the positivity rate becomes concerning above 5%, and indicates the virus is spreading in a community.

Broomfield remains under Level Yellow coronavirus restrictions on the state’s color-coded dial. In order to move to Level Blue, the city and county must meet all of the metrics of Level Blue for at least a one-week period.

Vaccinations

Residents continue to get vaccinated. As of Tuesday, 6,558 residents have initiated vaccination, while 11,169 residents have completed vaccination, according to city and county data.

Data shows 73.9% of the 70+ population has completed vaccination and 13.2% of the population has initiated vaccination, totaling 87.1% of the population.

“We’re still making significant progress on vaccination our older adult populations,” Vahling said Tuesday.

The 65-69 age group is not far behind, with 83.9% of the population having either completed or initiated vaccination. Data shows 51.2% of the 60-64 age group has initiated or completed vaccination.

In Broomfield, 49.42% of vaccines have been Moderna, while 47.59% have been Pfizer. Another 2.98% have been the Janseen vaccine and .01% is considered unknown.

Vahling said public health continues to talk to state and local partners about larger-scale vaccination events, with the goal of getting as many people through as possible.

Broomfield Public Health has partnered with Thornton Fire Department, Broomfield Family Medicine, FRIENDS of Broomfield and multiple health systems and pharmacies in offering appointments to eligible residents. A drive-thru vaccination clinic is scheduled Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Margaret W. Carpenter Rec Center, 11151 Colorado Blvd. in Thornton. There will be 1,200 vaccine doses available, and residents who are currently eligible can make an appointment. To sign up, visit https://bit.ly/3qPnsR2.
