With 3,287 new coronavirus cases, Ohio case total nears 900,000: Monday update - cleveland.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio - An additional 3,287 coronavirus cases reported Monday bring the state’s case total to 899,079, according to the Ohio Department of Health.

The number of deaths increased Monday by 55, to a total of 11,230 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic last year.

Monday’s cases fell below the 21-day rolling average of 5,434 cases. Deaths fell below the 21-day average of 73.

The state follows the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s definition of a “case,” which includes those diagnosed through genetic PCR or antigen tests, or people diagnosed in a clinical setting -- experiencing symptoms who are linked to a confirmed COVID-19 case, among other criteria.

Other figures Monday:

-30,248 doses of vaccine had been administered since Sunday’s report, bringing the total to 853,965 doses. The Department of Health is still not reporting how many of these are second doses. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported at least 163,622 people in Ohio have received their second dose.

-30,787 more coronavirus tests were reported to have been performed since Sunday. The state only counts molecular and PCR tests in this figure.

-8% of coronavirus PCR and molecular tests came back positive on Saturday, the most recent day for positivity rate. The seven-day rolling average from Saturday is 8%. For comparison, the average positivity rate on Jan. 1 was 14%. On Dec. 1, it was 14.3. On Nov. 1, it was 6.7%.

-60 more people were hospitalized with coronavirus since Sunday, to a total of 2,521.

Outside Ohio:

-103.2 million cases have been tracked globally, according to Johns Hopkins University. That includes 2.2 million deaths.

-In the U.S., there’s been 26.2 million cases and 441,000 deaths.

-The U.S. leads in deaths, followed by Brazil, with 224,000 deaths, and Mexico, with 158,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins.
