Coronavirus: Florida reports 31,000 cases, 220 deaths - WKMG News 6 & ClickOrlando

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Florida Department of Health released new coronavirus data following the holiday Saturday.

Officials said that new data would not come out on New Year’s Day.

Before the break in reports, the Florida Department of Health disclosed in statement tweeted on its HealthyFla site that evidence of a new and apparently more contagious coronavirus strain first seen in England has been detected in a Martin County man with no recent travel history.

Florida has evidence of the first identified case of the UK COVID-19 variant in Martin County. The individual is a male in his 20s with no history of travel. The Department is working with the CDC on this investigation. We encourage all to continue practicing COVID-19 mitigation.

Other cases of the new strain have been reported in Colorado and California.

Martin County is north of Palm Beach County, which along with Miami-Dade and Broward counties have been the state’s hardest hit region in dealing with coronavirus cases.

The Florida health statement said the agency is working with the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on investigating the case. Officials gave no other details about the case.

The following totals include cases from both Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.

Below is a breakdown of Florida COVID-19 data reported by the state on Jan. 2:

Cases

The Florida Department of Health reported 31,518 new cases on Saturday, bringing the state’s overall total to 1,354,833 cases since March.

Deaths

Florida reported 220 new virus deaths Saturday. This means at least 22,210 people have died in relation to the coronavirus across the state, including 320 non-residents who died in Florida.

Hospitalizations

As of Saturday afternoon, there are currently 6,701 people with the virus hospitalized in Florida, according to the state Agency for Health Care Administration.

Since March, 63,148 people have been hospitalized in Florida after complications from the coronavirus. That number includes the 280 people who have been recently hospitalized due to the virus, according to the health department’s daily report.

Positivity rate

The percent of positive results ranged from 7.98% to 23.00% over the past two weeks and was 10.13% Friday

Vaccinations

The Florida Department of Health recently began releasing a daily report on COVID-19 vaccines administered throughout the state. As of Saturday, 243,107 people have been vaccinated in Florida.
